For 150 years Varvakios Agora, the Athens' Central Food Market has provided Athenians with all their fresh produce; farmers from across Greece send their wonderful goods here so that throughout the year we are spoiled with some of the best fruits and vegetable, fish, meat, nuts, grains and dairy in Europe.

We love our market, it's been there for us through the good times and the hard times. The neighborhood has faced challenges over the last few years however some of the oldest shops and cafe in the city can be found in the market area providing locals with excellent quality at affordable prices.

Now we want to show you where all the good stuff is! Our excellent hosts from 'The Greek Kitchen' are very familiar with the market and many of the people who work there. On your walk, you will learn about the history of the area, Greek food culture and how to shop there with confidence yourself - shopping at a local market can be an intimidating experience!

During your walk, you'll taste a number of local products, introduced to shops, cafes and bars that you might not find in a guidebook and then head back to The Greek Kitchen to enjoy a filling Greek brunch in our garden where you'll have the opportunity to sit down and relax with your host, talk about food, places to get food, things to see and do anything you like!

From age 12 and up.

Please bring a bottle of water, wear comfortable clothing appropriate for walking in a busy city center location, a hat, sunscreen and camera!

Monday to Saturday 

• 9:00 am: Meeting at The Greek Kitchen
• 9:10 am: Head out into the market to explore, taste and learn all about this fascinating central district
• 11:00 am: Break for a coffee at a traditional "kafeneio" coffee house
• 11:20 am: Continue exploring the area with your host
• 12:00 pm: Head back to The Greek Kitchen for a freshly prepared lunch 
• 1:00 pm: Time to say thank you and goodbye and enjoy the rest of your day in Athens!
