At Grandma’s Cooking Barcelona, we have created a huge community of grandmas who are willing to share their culinary secrets with you. They are proud to spread their decades worth of traditional Spanish recipes to people around the globe.
For each cooking class, we contact a different grandma so you'll be exposed to a wide range of cooking styles and techniques. All our grandmas are assisted by a social cook, who will translate for her throughout the class.
First, you'll head to the food markets and little shops in grandma's neighborhood. The menu will be decided at this time, while you explore and select the best seasonal ingredients on offer.
Next, we'll head back to grandma's house. In our hands-on format, grandma will teach you to cook a full menu from scratch, consisting of a starter, main dish, and dessert. The dishes will be paired with local wines or refreshments.
Every participant will have a cutting board, cooking utensils, and an apron in order to take an active role in the cooking class. After the class, we will share our culinary creations in a group meal, toasting the learning we just had from our grandma of the day!
Don't miss out on experiencing this unique slice of Spanish life.
Please note: Our grandmas’ cooking lessons in Barcelona are limited to small groups of 8 people.
Your "Grandma of the Day" will propose a full menu consisting of a starter, a main dish and a dessert.
Get inspired by some examples of what you can expect from this hands-on cooking experience.
Starter examples:
Escalivada (literally means “cooked in hot ashes” and it consists of cooking red pepper, onion, and eggplant to produce a smoky taste.)
Do not miss Catalan Romesco Sauce. The main ingredients are grilled tomatoes, garlic head, almonds, hazelnuts and ñora pepper meat.)
Main Dish examples:
- Catalan Surf and Turf Dishes (meatball stuffed with cuttlefish and stewed in a fish broth or chicken stew with crayfish and mussels)
- The famous and ever popular Seafood Paella: our Grandma's may cook up a black rice, colored with the ink of the cuttlefish and include seasonal artichokes.
We also use fresh fish from the Mediterranean Sea: sole fish with almond cream, monkfish and hake casserole, cuttlefish with potatoes - the options are endless!
Dessert examples:
-Torrijas: The British call it bread pudding, while Americans would probably call it "French Toast." Torrijas is a dessert recipe coming from the south of Spain during the 19th century as a way to use up stale bread. Make torrijas with your own hands and savour the amazing flavour!
- Pears cooked in red wine with spices, such as cinnamon, clove, and anise, which will remind you of Christmas time.
- Mel y Mato, a delicious fresh cheese dessert, mato is a delicacy made by the monks of Monserrat's monestary. Served cold with a drizzling of local honey and dried fruits.
