Excellent experience in a small group and in the most idyllic setting. All the staff are very knowledgable and helpful. I gained a greater understanding of how real Balinese food is sourced, prepared, cooked and presented. I can’t wait to try it all when I return how.
Not only did we learn a lot, on top of that we laughed so much! Amazing experience were we learned more than we expected about Balinese culture. The teachers had incredible energy, very relaxed class were you learn a lot about Balinese cuisine, the spices, ustensiles…
I enjoyed it very much , and up to the expectations. Beautiful location and nice staff.
In my opinion you shouldn t offer such an abundant breakfast on the arrival at the hotel because afterwards I was not able to enjoy all the food we prepared. I was already full. But most important don t offer to pick up people in other places than the restaurant... nobody came to pick me up at cocomart supermarket and if my friend Stella wasn t already at the restaurant and told me to go there , I would have lost the class I payed. (Therefore I payed two taxi instead of one).
This was a really lovely thing to do. We had such a lovely, chatty chef. The actual location of the cooking school is stunning: you walk in from a noisy street into a quiet, green oasis full of beautiful trees, gorgeous traditional buildings and a koi pond. the class is in a pavillion with a hilarious, friendly and wonderful chef. And the food you make is just sublime. Lovely thing to do with kids too. Highly recommended.
The day was really nice, we met some great people and the lady running the cooking class is really friendly and fun. Not sure if its because we chose beginner class but we would have liked to do some cooling whereas this was more show and tell. The food did taste amazing though.
Class was nice. The market tour was not anything to write home about
Depends what you want. If you want to listen to a lot of talking, then this is a good class. If you want to actually do some cooking, then don’t choose this class. It is almost the entire class of just watching others cook.
So many fresh ingredients used to prepare delicious dishes. Everything made from scratch from the satay peanut paste to the coconut milk. Great environmental appeal not to see a tin of anything. Enjoyed watching the satay chicken sticks being barbecued over the coconut husks. Lovely morning followed by very tasty food.
We were a group of 13 people in Friday class. There was no market visit but the class started with an introduction of local ingredients which are crucial for balinese cuisine. Our instructor Yuk De made an extra stand up show before cooking which gave us pleasent moment. Yuk De and her team was very friendly and helpful. Anyone can participate with a little cooking skills. We had a delicious lunch with the group and at least now we know how to prepare Nasi & Mi Goreng or how they are prepared. Thanks a lot.
The teacher was a delight! She made us laugh so much and it was clear that she really knew her stuff. Every dish we made was delicious and the care they put into the ingredients and the class was apparent. Would reccomend!
We met a group of 17 in a café on the main street of Ubud. Taken to the market, which was fascinating. Back to the cooking school where our group of 17 prepared an amazing lunch. Oleg was our instructor and not only was he well informed about Balinese cuisine but was amusing and engaged well with our group. I would definitely recommend.
It was amazing to see how 20 plus people young and old from many different countries could come together under the guidance of some wonderful chefs and create several delicious meals.
Stunning setting, really nice people, gorgeous ingredients, so educational and fun. Resulting feast was delicious. Would highly recommend.
Really enjoyed the food/spice market tour. Our guide provided lots of cultural information and explained all the foods in the market. Back at the cooking school food prep and cooking was interesting and fun. The final product was delicious. Highly recommend.
The roast duck ceremony cooking class is a must-do! Knowledgeable, humorous, and creative teacher and staff. I learned about herbs, spices, and roots for all the marinades plus how to roast the duck Balinese style, with approachable adaptations for Western chefs. The best traditional meal I have eaten during my 1-month stay.
Ok but nothing special, dishes were not super tasty and I did not like the jokes about pooping
The course description is right on point - we visited the market, learned about ingredients and cooking tools, and cooked and ate some great food. But we also learned a lot about Balinese culture and how cooking fits into it and helps preserve it. Plenty of time for breaks and eating with a welcoming but no-pressure atmosphere to participate - just right for vacation! Incredible setting as well!
Not Bad . Dishes were average .
Couldn“t have been better...loved seeing the fresh.herbs and ingredients first hand...great to start with something so quick like the sambal...I got a total thrill.from.seeing fresh tamarind used for the first time!!! and the heat of that (half) a chilli was something else. I.loved chopping.up.the garlic, shallots, spring.onion.and chilli.with the.other participants, and observing the.nasi.goreng and mei.goreng.being.put together. Likewise, it was a toyal.thrill.to.smell and see.how you grind the freshly cooked peanurs on.that huge.mortar and.pestle for the peanut sauce.....with the precooked cloves of garlic. What a cuisine!!!!! I am.happy just sitting here in Australia recollecting.my.marvellous experience. Thankyou Honeymoon Guesthouse and Casa Luna Cooking School.....
Well organised , beautiful surroundings, and lots of laughs . Our host was full of Balinese wisdom and cultural insights . I would thoroughly recommend this for beginner or the more experienced home cooks
My Mum and I attended this class and we absolutely loved it! We learnt so much and really appreciated the detail in descriptions of the ingredients and substitutes for our home countries. It was the right balance of watching, discussions with the group and instructors, and hands on cooking, All the food tasted delicious and it was great to try new dishes. Would highly recommend!
Loved the stories and fun brought into this class. I learnt a lot of little things I wasn’t expecting to learn and had a lot of fun!
What a fantastic time we had! First, the place we cooked in was gorgeous. The trip to the market was a nice experience but unfortunately we were there before most stalls had opened because of the holiday the day before (not really anyone’s fault). Everyone who worked there were so friendly and informative and walked us through the entire cooking process which we got to help with. The food we made was delicious and we got to eat buffet style when we were done. We would definitely go back!
Very instructive. Good lectures about the ingredients.
We were in great hands and learnt so much. Thank you
Great fun, hands on experience, teaching us about traditional Balinese ingredients, dishes and ways of cooking. The food was great and the beautiful women who run the day are fantastic and loads of fun. I wish we had time to do the Friday class too! Would definitely recommend for people wanting to try something different.
The smells and aromas from the class at Casa Luna were really wonderful. I felt I learnt a lot and really enjoyed the class vibe.
This is the 4th time I have done the class. The team are so welcoming, warm and funny. The kitchen is a comfortable and set in a beautiful environment and the the produce and menus are delicious! I will always choose this class when in Ubud.
The hosts were informative, detailed, and had very positive energy. Thank you for making the class fun!
Loved every bit of it. Our hostess/chef shared about living in Ubud; the therapeutic benefits of the fresh ingredients we used, and the food was heavenly. Best we’ve tasted in Bali.
We are very grateful for the experience which we enjoyed so much! The setting is so beautiful. The class is very informative and done is such fun way. Our Master Chef was fantastic. We learned so much about Bali, its people and cooking traditions. The lesson about the spices and cooking preparations was great and we can recommend to anyone wishing to learn to cook Balinese food. Alex and Shane Mace
I have already given my review on Casa Luna in my previous mail.
It was great to start with an understanding of the different ingredients and then go into the cooking part.
Thank you to a wonderful team effort. All the food prep was hands on and the small size of the group made it all the more enjoyable . Great job to the team !!
Great teacher, lots of fun and jokes. The smells, sights and tastes are all amazing. Would do again and again.
Relaxed clean atmosphere. Most amazing food I've ever eaten! Highly recommend.
I am a chef and I love taking cooking classes wherever I travel . This was such a great experience , it was my favourite cooking class in Asia . The place was absolutely beautiful . The class was excellent , educational , they teach REAL 100 % Traditional fresh and unique food . There was a great vibe lots of laughts and a great foodie experience overall . I will definitely do it again on another trip to Bali All the stuff was incredible , really nice very helpful. The women cooking were so welcoming . The teacher was very funny and cheerful. The assistant of the teacher was super nice too . The guy who picked me up made me feel very comfortable and he was like a tourist guide explaining me were the temples and main attractions were . I highly recommend this ti anyone who was to know more about the food , and the unique traditions of Bali.
Hostess was fantastic. She was very entertaining and we had lots of laughs whilst learning about Balinese spices. The food we cooked was just the best with a multitude of different flavours.
Had a fantastic time, our host was so funny and entertaining. The food was delicious and learnt so much. Thank you for having us!
Yade was fabulous teacher. A full of positive energy, laughter and enthusiasm about how to prepare fresh, authentic, tasty local dishes. It was great to get to see busy, colourful local market in action. I would recommend to try her class 😊
The food we made was delicious. And the teacher was a delight mixing personal funny anecdotes with great teaching skills.
A wonderful small class of 6 people with a knowledgeable and entertaining instructor. Market visit was interesting and allowed the opportunity to purchase some items for home use. Excellent description of cooking techniques and uses of ingredients once we cooked at home. Cultural practices and lifestyle info added greatly to the presentation.
The market tour and guide were fantastic and very informative! And the cooking class was wonderful and food was delicious!!! Thank you
What a wonderfully delicious experience. I so enjoyed learning about all the local food, using the local ingredients to cook, and meeting all the nice people. It was a 5 star experience!
This was a truly enjoyable experience from start to finish. Our teacher Oleg was a huge character with a huge smile who had us all under his spell from the get-go. Hugely engaging and funny, he made learning all about Balinese cuisine, culture and tradition so easy to understand and interesting to learn, so much so he managed to hold our attention throughout. It was fascinating to learn all about the key ingredients from a medicinal point of view as well as culinary and how various amounts of the same collection of herbs and spices in each dish created such a different flavour combination. It was the perfect blend of talking and hands-on cooking, picking up lots of tips, tricks and techniques along the way and just like Balinese culture the entire approach was always fun and relaxed - nothing serious and lots of smiles and laughter. All of the staff were wonderfully friendly and always on hand to help explain and assist us throughout all the various stages. We cooked an incredible menu of really tasty dishes and once all of the slicing, chopping, and preparation was complete the cooking itself was really quick and easy and soon we had a huge banquet of delicious and nutritious dishes to feast on. We enjoyed a range of beautiful salads and curries that were deceptively filling and hearty. It was great to meet so many other like-minded people from around the world to share the cooking and eating with and we would highly recommend this class to anyone interested in learning more about healthy but super easy and tasty vegan and vegetarian food. A super relaxed but fun and immersive class that's an experience you'll never forget. The coconut sorbet at the end was a standout dish that everyone raved about too! Don't hesitate to book this class, whatever your cooking level or experience and be sure to check out their restaurant Casa Luna too as it's definitely some of the best food we've eaten in Ubud. Thanks so much to everyone who made our day so special and we hope to see you again next year to sample another class. Julie, Kevin, Sadie, and Tony from The UK.
The teacher is awesome.
I joined a small group of participants, all of which were also tourists from other countries. Though we did not know each other but we got to be friends through food and culture. We had a Balinese cooking class which was also one of the best in Indonesia. We were housed in a traditional yet elegant kitchen with our own workstations and ingredients. The market tour was short, yet insightful. We got to ask the locals about alternative ingredients that we can use back home. Herbs and spices workshop was really great! The instructor was able to cater all our needs an questions and the class ended with a huge feast of Balinese cuisine. It all tasted great and i was amazed with myself for creating a delicious Balinese dish. Not bad for a first timer!
We had a great day learning about Balinese cuisine, recipes were super tasty and the teacher couldn’t be better. I would totally recommend it.
Interesting cooking class with local market tour, lovely hosts and good food. Would definitely recommend!
Lovely teacher, good food, loved the cooking class.
In the class we had 3 professional chefs and 5 novices. We learned so much and had so much fun and the results (meal) was amazing—so fragrant, colorful and flavorful.
We learned so much about Balinese food, cooking and traditions from this short class. It was fun and engaging and the teacher just great.. Me and my husband would recommend this class to anyone interested in cooking but short on time..
The best vegan food!!! Loved the location and people. Thank you 🙏🏻😊
Friendly and funny host - Yudi! Beautiful location, great lesson on ingredients, interactive and of course delicious food
The staff was wonderful and friendly. The food was plentiful. It would be great though if we could have done individual cooking so as to get more hands on experience. I would even pay more for that type of class.
Great
Beautiful experience, especially as we had the possibility to work with Balinese women and learn more about their traditions in the kitchen. Not to mention the gorgeous meal we got to enjoy at the end of the class and the stunning garden that surrounds everything. Top! Carmen
Teacher was amazing, funny and full of cooking skills! Best Indonesian food I have ever tasted and made!
Thanks, Ude and her wonderful crew at Casa Luna for creating and delivering an informative but very enjoyable cooking class and market visit. Our lunch was well worth the effort.
My daughter and I thoroughly enjoyed the Sunday twighlight smoked duck class. I enjoyed learning about herbs and spices and the techniques used to create a ceremonial meal. The evening was filled with good company delicious food and fun and laughter. Highly recommend.
Fantastic, well thought out lesson. Oleg was a brilliant teacher.
The teacher was so friendly, helpful and generous with his knowledge. It was a fun, non-threatening environment and the array of dishes we cooked was mouthwatering! Best Indonesian food I had in Bali - fresh, flavoursome and diverse tastes.
We really enjoyed the class and the meals we made were delicious. I think althogh that de were too many people (15?) And that was a bit annoying, specially for the visit to the market, as it is such a busy and small place. Moreover they showed you a knife stand, and many people started buying some, making the rest of us wait there for 20 minutes.
Oleg, one of your instructors, is full of knowledge and has a great sense of humour. Not only do you get to learn about produce and local food, but also about the Balinese people and there way of life.
Enthousiastic cook, Nice market visit.,
Educational and fun. A great few hours in Ubud
Our market tour was very informative. We learned a lot of techniques here that we don’t use in the stares. Thank yiu forvthat. The staff was very friendly and explained their skills with great responses. I would give them five stars. The food was wonderful.
This class is amazing! They have some structure already for this and professionals to take care of you. You visit the market and understand more about the ingredients from someone who really cooks and can give you real information. The teacher is funny and welcoming, and food here is absolutely amazing. I totally recomend it.
I very much enjoyed it! Learned some new recipes that I'll certainly will try later. Just don't expect the pick up service to work as described in the website, better to go by yourself. The staff is all very nice and open, and the place where the cooking class is taken is beautiful and clean.
The class was really well presented. Our teacher was very enthusiastic and informative in the preparation of traditional Balinese dishes The lesson was very practical and hands on with the end result being a delightful culinary experience.
We really enjoyed the market visit and the cooking class. It was really informative, and the lady running it was very fun and interesting. We would have liked to have had a bit more "hands-on" experience, but otherwise it was really good.
This was a great choice to explore more about Balinese culture. The chef was friendly and professional. I cooked and tried so many different dishes, all of them were amazing. I can't wait to cook it myself at home.
I'm glad that I decided to take this class before I left Bali. It was amazing!! I enjoyed the market tour as the tour guide was very knowledgeable. Afterward, we arrived the school, started cooking and made good friends within class as well. What I have learnt are totally different and interesting such as the ingredients, techniques and also the flavors of the spices. Before leaving, we enjoy our delicious meal.
It was such a very fantastic time spending in Bali. The staffs were very nice and the flavor of the food was tasty. I would definitely come back to this place in future.
Very educational and interesting. And entertaining.
VERY ENTERTAINING AND INFORMATIVE DAY. TRIP TO THE MARKET BEFORE THE CLASS WAS A GREAT WAY TO UNDERSTAND ALL THE INGREDIENTS. FOOD WE PRODUCED WAS DELICIOUS AND COLORFUL. DEFINATELY RECOMMEND.
It was an awesome experience. Going to the market and having someone explaining you about the spices, the sweets, the veggies was really good. We got to know a lot about the culture. The kitchen is in an lovely place, the honeymoon suite, has a swimming pool and a beautiful garden. Uday is really friendly and funny, explained everything about the dishes we were cooking and the dishes were really simple to cook, just very rich in ingredients. I totally recommend!
The cooking school provides a fascinating insight into Balinese life, beliefs and culture through learning about its food, cooking and culinary myths.
Class discussions are relaxed and friendly and are held in the elegant grounds of the second Honeymoon Guesthouse. They include specific references to the role of food in Balinese society, its ceremonial use and religious importance.
Participants learn about the exotic herbs and spices used in ceremonial and everyday Balinese dishes and are encouraged to actively help prepare the lavish Balinese feasts that will then be enjoyed with a glass or two of the local rice wine or homemade hibiscus tea.
